A walk in the park (York River SP)

Thursday morning I started the replacement of the ceiling fan in our bed room, which I managed to make a two day project. In the afternoon we had planed on a trip to York Rive SP. Planing on arriving in late afternoon to rent a canoe and paddle the salt marsh in early evening when the birds would be most active. Upon arrival we learned the canoe concession is run by the state park service and was closed at 4PM even thou the park is open until 8:30.

We then walked a trail that followed the marsh and observed a nest with Osprey.  Along the trail we saw a lizard that must have been 8 inches long and very large. Too fast to get a picture, but the largest we have ever seen in Virginia.

Also encountered a rough green snake on the trail. We have seen this snake at home twice in our 25+ years living here.  They are usually found in dense growths of vegetation along streams and lakes.

While setting at a overlook we watched the Ospery on her nests and her mate fish and return with food. He also chased a couple blue herons that got close the the platform that their nest was on.

Along the trail Edna photographed a very different tree trunk, lots of burls.

Open returning we had a"dinner picnic" at a table overlooking the Marsh and York River.

Later we went to the park boat access located in a separate section of the park. Upon arrival we saw 3 nice boat ramps and a long fishing pier. Talked to several people fishing and they were catching croaker, channel catfish and eels.

It was a very enjoyable trip, even if we did not get to canoe as it is only a little more that an hour from home we plan to return in a few weeks to see if there are Osprey chicks.
