A visit to Merchants Mill Pond

Weather look great so we planned our trip to the SP.  Edna made fried chicken and potato salad for our lunch the evening before. We used maps on Edna’s phone for directions. The route was a scenic trip through rural Virginia and North Carolina.  Merchants Mill Pond is actually a Cypress Swamp, with camping, walking and canoe trails. After arrival we visited the Visitor Center, staffed with a very helpful people and learned it is where you can rent canoes.  We decided to walk the Cypress Point Trail.

When through walking it was 1 PM and we decided to have lunch at the picnic area.  After lunch we rented a Canoe ($5) and enjoy the world of mistletoe, Spanish moss and cypress trees. It would be very easy to get lost in the swamp and the trail is marked with colored /numbered buoys.  We canoed the trail for about an hour and half.

Buoys marking the trail

The goose family did not seem concerned with the Alligator residents, as they glided along.

Maybe somebody’s home

Saw lots of cooters while on the water.

We used Edna’s maps again for another way home, it was great, we did end up on a gravel road with no markings for several miles clear cut and standing water on both side of the road. The only living thing we saw on this part of the trip was a large turtle crossing the road.
