April 25 -- 50 YEARS AGO TODAY

April 25, 2015 - Fifty years ago on this date two major events happened: Edna & I were married and Colorado joined the states observing daylight savings time.  Our delayed honeymoon was spent camping in the Colorado Rockies. Today, we are still camping. The difference being that we have given up tent camping & back packing for the comfort of an RV with a bed!

Camping has been a constant throughout our lives. Toby was a few months old on his first camping trip - sleeping in the sleeve of a down jacket in a small blow-up kiddie pool!  We also had  2 collies and a Siamese cat on that trip to Wrights Lake in CA. On Guam, we camped on the beach & fished all night. We've back packed with 3 small children in the Green Mountains of Vermont. it rained everyday for a week, but we kept on camping.

Canoe trips in NY and Maine, and back packing parts of the Appalachian Trail, caused us to rethink our approach. We started bring along teenage babysitters.

That led to a Senior Girl Scout troop. (In those days girls didn't go off camping & canoeing on their own.)  So we canoed the Delaware River & group camped on Assateague Island and winter camped at Addison Boyce.

By the time our youngest was old enough to carry a day pack, we ventured into the world of RV's.

Had some great trips in that Tioga: across Canada to see Reeder, Barb & Kids in ND, trips to Denver, Florida, Maine & of course the Eastern Shore. A move to VA brought an end to the Tioga.  Kids had less school holidays here and were developing interests of their own. Dave sold the camper ....... and no one spoke to him for a long time. We still managed a few camping trips, but life on the farm kept us busy.

In 2003 we went to an RV show and again we came home with another RV impulse purchase. Twelve years later and 3 unit changes we are still camping.

I'm not sure purists would call this camping. We do still prefer national park, national forest and state park campgrounds. We’ve had some great trips many to southern beaches

but also to the gulf coast, Louisiana, Florida, and a dream trip to Alaska and then back through Denver. Still on Edna's bucket list is a trip to Big Bend NP.

For our 50th anniversary we planned a trip to NC to do a little canoeing, birding & photography. I guess it's fitting that this trip got rescheduled . We are just too old to canoe in the rain. So it's being delayed, just like our first camping trip.
